Rose Green

When looking at maps and general historical information on the district I find that the area to the west of Bognor Regis is very interesting, as it includes such a number of developments that would have once been just a group of villages, i.e. Aldwick, Rose Green, Nyetimber and Pagham.

Having looked at Aldwick recently I thought this week we could take a look at Rose Green, Nyetimber and Pagham. Today it is quite difficult to discern where the boundaries are, no such problems in the past, when it would clearly have been a ‘journey’ to each area.

According to the 1807 guide to Bognor or Hothamton Rose Green is very small as it mentions that, “from the simple scenery and profound retirement of this little spot, it is deservedly entitled to our attention.

It consists of a few cottages and two or three farm houses, which if not picturesque, are extremely neat and agreeably situated, being detached from each other by intervening gardens and corn-fields.” This description then continues with the comment that ‘there is, strictly speaking, only one avenue to Rose Green, but an imperfect road has been made to it, in another direction.’ Apparently this other road which is ‘almost imperceptible,’ has stopped the inhabitants of the area from being ‘completely secluded from the rest of the world.’

Nyetimber however received no such attention in the guide.
